काश अगर मैं उड़ पाती
दूर से दिखती छोटी सी उस खिड़की में
फ़िर झाँक के आती
रोज़ लगाती नीले नीले
इस अम्बर का लंबा फेरा
सारा जग तब अपना होता
जहाँ घर नहीं, वहाँ भी डेरा
दूर दिखा कुछ
हुआ कौतुहल
उड़ी, जा छुआ
जब जी चाहा पहुँच गई बस
शोर मचा, ना हल्ला हुआ
बातों के अम्बार लगाते
लोग हमेशा कहते कहाते
नोक झोंक कुछ खट्टी मीठी
कुछ कड़वी, कुछ बड़ी रसीली
जीवन का हर रंग परखती
कुछ समझती, कुछ ना कहती
दूर पेड़ की सबसे ऊँची
फुनगी पर बैठी इतराती
हवा के झोंकों के संग रहती
दुनिया को बस दूर से तकती
पर जीवन क्या इतना सरल है?
कठिन परीक्षा हर एक पग में
दुःख ज़्यादा, सुख थोड़े जग में
मानव बना क्रिया का दास
कर्म से फ़िर भी पीछे रहता
सपने चुनता, बुनता, गढ़ता
सपने में ही जीता मरता
इसी जाल में बंधते-बंधते
घुटन हुई
तो बस कह बैठी
काश अगर मैं उड़ पाती

If only I could fly
to peek again
into that tiny window in the distance
to circumnavigate
the boundless azure skies
to roost
even where I may not nest
to be led only by curiosity
heedless to rebukes
listening to conversations
juicy, tart, sweet, and bitter
scouring the colours of creation
savoring, not defining
preening atop the crown
of the tallest tree
to ride on the whiffy wind
that takes me far from it all.
Far from it all though
the flightless me
is tested
at each step
wading through many sorrows
finding few joys
clamped in routines
bereft of thoughtful action
choosing, weaving, engraving dreams
living and dying in dreams
when the spin
strangulates
how I wish
I could fly.
